Statement of Environmental Impacts

Hawthorn Accountancy Solutions is a management accountancy service offering assistance with monthly accounts, Sage software, credit control and payroll and bookkeeping solutions.

Activities are office based but an environmental review has identified and prioritised our significant environmental impacts. These include using electricity for lighting and power. We also consume paper and produce small quantities of waste. To manage these impacts we monitor consumption and have put control measures in place to reduce environmental impacts.

Summary of impacts and control measures

Consumption of electricity for lighting and power – This is the activity with the most significant adverse environmental impact associated with Hawthorn Accountancy Solutions. Our electricity is generated by combusting fossil fuels a finite resource. Large quantities of Carbon Dioxide are produced during the combustion process, a heat fixing green house gas linked to global warming. This produces large-scale changes in climate and widespread flooding in coastal areas. The combustion process also emits various Sulphur Oxides. These are a major cause of acid rain, which causes acidification of lakes and streams, damages trees and sensitive soils. Acid rain also accelerates the corrosion of paint, buildings, and other structures.

To reduce this impact we minimise use of electricity wherever possible.

Generating small quantities of waste – This is disposed of to landfill, which loses valuable resources. Waste biodegrading emits various landfill gases including Methane. Methane has heat-fixing properties 31 times greater than Carbon Dioxide and has been linked with adverse health effects in humans and the environment.

To reduce this impact we minimise waste production and reuse materials.

Everyday activities consume paper, which uses up natural resources. The paper production process is energy intensive producing more greenhouse gases. Transport associated with collection of raw material through to delivery of final product results in large quantities of emissions harmful to the environment and human health.

To reduce this impact paper is reused for scrap and any waste is recycled to divert this valuable resource from landfill.
